Duplex

After he had already built four other duplexes in Frohnau, Rudolf Fränkel was commissioned in 1929 to erect a duplex in Schmargendorf. Fränkel solved the challenge of the new design – the narrow plot – by laying out each half of the building on a single axis. The double residence has a broad clinker brick base with an attached garage to the side that also serves as a terrace. An exterior coating of white plaster marks the actual three-story living area. The sun terrace on the top floor features the architect’s typical projecting roof. To optimally use the space, he arranged the downstairs interior as an interconnected suite. Only the upstairs bedrooms were separated by small corridors.

The duplex is among the smaller structures in the villa neighborhood of Schmargendorf, yet it fully meets the standards of upper-income family residences.
