The Komödie Theatre on the Kurfürstendamm
Hidden away inside the modern structure of the business and shopping centre Ku-Damm Karee’ of the 1970s are two theatres designed by Oskar Kaufmann for light entertainment: the Komödie and Kurfürstendamm Theatre.
The Komödie built in 1922 used to be part of a five-storey building designed by Oskar Kaufmann and was immediately adjacent to the Kurfürstendamm Theatre.
The Komödie is a theatre without an upper circle but with double boxes on two floors around the edge. The rounded ticket office and the foyer in front face the street. Convex and concave walls, neatly placed columns and filigree wrought iron banisters define the theatre’s interior.
Max Reinhardt was the Komödie’s theatre director until 1932, followed with temporary interruptions in 1934 by Hans Wölffer.
Both theatres, which are in many parts still original, are to be demolished In connection with the new development of the property.
