House Salzbrunn
Josef Simon commissioned this block of apartment buildings for affluent tenants, for all the flats had generous 150–250 m2 floor plans with five to seven rooms. The special aspect of the block’s design lies in the fact that Rosenthal aimed for a unified impression through the use of identical forms of windows. Thus the windows facing the street are narrower and paired where necessary. The highlight of each living unit is its outward-curving balcony. Projecting semi-circular staircases in front correspond with semi circular balconies on the garden side, where the living/dining rooms, furnished with large windows, are located. Underground parking and a courtyard building (since demolished) with a laundry and doorman’s apartment enhanced the facilities.
This property owned by Josef and Gertrud Simon was expropriated in 1939; the couple immigrated to Brazil. The block was rebuilt after sustaining damage in the war, and some of the apartments still have their original floor plan.
