Roxy-Palast

The Roxy Palace was a typical modernist cinema, one of several large cinemas built in Berlin including the Titania-Palast by Schöffler/Schloenbach/Jacobi, the Universum by Erich Mendelsohn and the Lichtburg by Rudolf Fränkel. Behind its façade were united a movie theater for 1100 viewers, commercial offices and a department store. The building is a steel frame construction with an elongated dark red plastered façade, whose bands of metal-framed windows and architectural lighting above the cinema entrance contribute to its distinctive appearance. Destroyed in World War II, the Roxy Palace was rebuilt in altered form by Paul Stohrer. The cinema still operated into the 1970s. Later it was the temporary location of the La Belle disco, where in April 1986 a bombing was perpetrated in which three people lost their lives (see plaque).
The original façade of the landmark historical building was reconstructed in 1987; major portions of the interior design of the former cinema (today a wholefood market) are still well preserved.
