House Dr. Rabe, Zwenckau

South of Leipzig, in the township of Zwenckau, Dr. Erich Rabe asked his friend the architect Adolf Rading to design a house and surgery. The surgery was on the ground floor of the three-storey square structure. The two upper floors housed the doctor’s private rooms. Different sized windows and a protruding roof over the entrance define the appearance of the brightly plastered building.
The garden facade is defined by a boxed window with balcony in front of it. Behind the window is the most beautiful room of the entire house; a living room hall with a three-part wire art work by Oskar Schlemmer, who was responsible for the interior design. Rading and Schlemmer have created a Gesamtkunstwerk (synthesis of the arts) of unique quality.
Dr. Rabe’s daughter lived in the building until the 1990s. An industrialist and art-lover from Hamburg bought this unique villa and restored it to its original appearance.
