Doppelvilla am Karolinger Platz
The building on Karolingerplatz, one of the early, lesser-known structures by the cosmopolitan architect Mendelsohn, rose parallel to other, later famous buildings: the hat factory in Luckenwalde, the Mosse-Haus in Berlin, and the Einstein Tower in Potsdam. The double villa with a nearly symmetrical floor plan was erected for two clients; Mendelsohn originally was one of them. The building’s corner location between Frankenallee and Karolingerplatz greatly influenced the design, which is enhanced by the interaction between horizontal bands of clinker brick and plaster and the staggered arrangement of the cubic volumes. Behind the three-fold corner with its tower-like appearance the stair cases and the access to the roof terrace are placed.
