Zweigenthal, Hermann
geb. 1904 Wien – 1968 New York gest.
Hermann Zweigenthal studied in Berlin, with Hans Poelzig among others, after 1924, and at the time was already collaborating with the director Max Reinhardt on stage design. For a few years he worked as an independent architect and also designed other office buildings in Berlin. After being briefly arrested by the Gestapo, he immigrated to Switzerland in 1933, then to Vienna, and in 1935 to London, where he adopted the name Herrey and worked as a stage designer. He immigrated in 1940 to the USA, where he again worked as an architect. In 1955 he returned to Germany as a director and received awards for his stagings, which included plays by Ionesco. After returning to the USA, he continued to work as an architect in New York until his death.
