Cohn, Ernst

geb. 1883 Wünnenberg / Westfalen – 1916 Frankreich gest.

The architect Ernst Cohen was born on April 11th, 1883 in Wuennenberg/Westphalia and fell in WW I during military service in France on March 21st, 1916. He still unknown even to people of the trade. There is little that we know about him: he worked as a free-lance architect in Essen. His only known building was the synagogue in the spa town of Bad Wildungen, in northern Hesse. It was inaugurated in 1914, was a richly decorated structure at the edge of the city centre and stood architecturally at the advent of Modernism. It was destroyed in an act of arson during the pogrom of November 1938 and demolished after 1945. A memorial stone outside the new building on the site points to the synagogue and the former Jewish community. In the local museum of Bad Wildungen an exhibition on the synagogue was presented in 2013/14.
