The former Roxy-Palast was one of the large cinemas built in the second half of the 1920s. Both a cinema and a department store were located behind the façade of the building, one of the major works of Berlin Neue Sachlichkeit [new objectivity] architecture. After World War II, the ruins of the RoxyPalast were rebuilt, in altered form, by Paul Stohrer. However, the façade was restored to its original form in 1987. The designer of the building, erected in 1929, was the Jewish architect Martin Punitzer, who in 1938 was forced to emigrate and went to Chile.
