Their buildings distinguish the cityscape of Berlin, but their names – with a few prominent exceptions –
are still little known. More than 300 Jewish architects practiced in Berlin before the Nazis prohibited
this in 1933. A few architects were then able to emigrate, but many were murdered in concentration
camps. As dedicated proponents of Modernist architecture, they built in the style of Neue Sachlichkeit
[New Objectivity] and the Bauhaus. On these guided tours, specially planned for the Jewish Culture
Days, you are invited to discover aspects of this diverse architectural inheritance and become
acquainted with the architects’ life stories.

The “White City” housing estate was built 1929-31 by architects Rudolf Salvisberg, Wilhelm Büning
and Bruno Ahrends. The Jewish landscape architect Ludwig Lesser was commissioned to design
the area enclosed by the rows of three-to-five storey flats. Instead of dividing the open space into the
customary separate gardens, Lesser wanted the green space to serve a social function, to be used as
a commons for leisure activities and not just for taking walks. The tour will focus both on the green
space and the architecture of the housing development.
